Plant Families
  • Introduce the Plant Family Phylum. (Page 10) Explain how plants are classified into families. Develop a chart as a class of the relationships over several generations of a fictitious family. Include mother, father, brother, sister, grandparents, aunts, cousins (first, second, third), step-mothers, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, etc.
  • Explore how plants adapt to differing amounts of light. (Page 34). Fill 2 plastic cups with wet cotton, place 3-4 seeds inside each container. Cover one with tinfoil so the seeds remain in the dark, leave the second open to the light. Is their rate of growth the same? Why is it different?
  • Poinsettias are grown from cuttings. (Page 40.) Experiment with growing different plants from a cutting. (Hint: ivy and philodendrons can be easily propagated from cuttings.)
  • National Poinsettia Day is December 12th. (Page 48.) What other plants and/or flowers have a day named in their honor?
